Scupi – Ancient Roman City (1st Century BC)
Explore the archaeological remains of Scupi, once a thriving Roman city. Walk through ancient streets, ruins, and structures that reveal how life looked more than 2,000 years ago.
Roman cities typically did not have a single entrance like Scupi; instead, they were planned on a grid with two main streets—the Cardo Maximus running north–south and the Decumanus Maximus running east–west, each usually ending in a city gate. This design meant that most Roman cities had multiple entrances, often four main gates, one at each end of the two major roads. The idea of a single main entrance applies more to certain military camps or temporary forts, but even standard Roman castra usually had four gates.
Theatre Of Scupi
Theatre of Scupi is one of the most impressive remnants of the Roman city that once thrived there. Built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, the theatre could accommodate thousands of spectators and served as a major venue for dramatic performances, public gatherings. Its semi-circular design, carved into a hillside, follows the classical Roman architectural style with tiered seating that offered excellent acoustics and clear views of the stage.
Hafzi Pasha’s Konak – Ottoman-Era Residence (1825)
Havzi Pasha Konak was a combined residence and administrative centre built in the early to mid-19th century, around 1830–1845, by Hivzi (Havzi) Pasha, the Ottoman governor of the Skopje Sanjak. The term “konak” refers to a mansion or official residence, and this complex served both as the pasha’s personal home and as the seat from which he conducted his administrative and governmental duties.
Skopje Aqueduct – Roman Engineering Marvel (1st Century AD)
The Skopje Aquaduct one of the rarest and best-preserved aqueducts in Europe. Built during the Roman period, the Skopje Aqueduct supplied water to the ancient settlement of Scupi.
Tumba Madzari – Neolithic Settlement (6000 BC)
Step into one of the most important prehistoric sites in the region. Tumba Madzari reveals how the earliest inhabitants of the Skopje Valley lived more than 8,000 years ago.
Skopje Fortress (Kale) – Symbol of the City
Volkasin was crowned King and made co-ruler with Emperor Uroš. At that time, Skopje served as the imperial capital of the Kingdom and Empire.
Mustafa Pasha Mosque – Ottoman Masterpiece
Visit one of Skopje’s most important mosques, constructed in 1492 by Vizier Mustafa Pasha. This elegant monument reflects the artistry and cultural influence of the Ottoman Empire.
Church of the Ascension of Jesus (Sv. Spas)
Church of the Ascension of Jesus (Sv. Spas)-Churches had to be built below ground level, which is historically documented, because Ottoman restrictions did not allow Christians to construct churches taller than nearby Muslim buildings, resulting in many semi-buried churches such as the Church of “St. Spas” in Skopje. Another belief is that a church had to be built over a period of 100 years, and there is also a legend—not an actual law—that to receive permission for construction, a powerful man would demand a girl or a marriage, a folk tale created to illustrate how difficult it once was to obtain permission to build a church.
